GRN Standard: Impervious Budgetwurm

We are finally nearing the end of this Standard season and with the Ravnica Allegiance spoilers just being a few days away, it’s time for me to build the deck for my last guild. So far I have covered decks for Dimir, Golgari, Izzet, Boros, and even 5 color, but I haven’t touched upon Selesnya yet. It took me a while to come up with something for Selesnya that I was excited to mess around with. The challenge was I wanted to create something that would be budget, but also exciting and different from the current Selesnya decks.

Eventually, however, I did remember a card that I thought was awesome, and not built around enough. That card is the timmiest card in Standard, a ten mana 16/16 with indestructible and convoke, it is Impervious Greatwurm. This monster of a card was off of my radar because it is the buy-a-box promo for Guilds of Ravnica and wasn’t available in your standard booster pack. Once I saw this card, I knew that I wanted to build around it and see just how fast we could power it out.

I must confess something. I am a huge fan of Wurms. They are one of my favorite creature types in Magic, thanks to one of my first Magic experiences of me opening a Return to Ravnica booster pack and seeing the absolute unit that is Ruination Wurm. Six mana for a 7/6 was awesome and got me really excited to play Magic. If that was exciting to me, 0 mana for a 16/16 would completely blow away 14 year old me. (Finger’s crossed for more wurms in the next set!)

Once I knew what I wanted I set to work. I searched for every single card that could create two or more creatures for one card and came up with a pretty impressive list. For the past 2 years, they have been seeding a lot of token making cards into Standard, and this has given us a wealth of options to choose from. I took all of the best options and ended up with some super solid token producers such as Saproling Migration, Spore Swarm, and Emmara, Soul of the Accord. With the help of these cards, powering out an early Greatwurm should hardly be a problem.

The next thing I needed to address was alternate wincons besides the Greatwurm. A huge indestructible creature is fantastic, but we aren’t guaranteed to have it. With the amount of token creation this deck has access to, Pride of Conquerors is 2 mana to Overrun your opponent. Ten tokens plus this is easily 30+ damage. Shanna, Sisay’s Legacy is also another creature that will be massive and hard for the opponent to deal with. And spending only 2 mana for a 5/5 or more is pretty good value. When all else fails, slamming in with Conclave Cavalier and 4 tokens is still going to produce good results.

Finally, this deck is also relatively cheap. If you can find your Impervious Greatwurms for $4-5 you can buy this deck for $30. If you don’t feel like coughing up the money for the buy-a-box promo, you can also substitute the Greatwurm with Arboretum Elemental and still have a very similar gameplan. Thank you all for reading, I hope you have a great week and an amazing Tuesday!
